You’ve probably already heard essential oils being revered for their healing, medicinal properties, but, used in the right way, essential oils can be an amazing addition to your skincare routine.
In fact, there is nothing quite as soothing and nourishing as feeding your skin with a couple of drops of your favorite skin-friendly essential oil mixed with a few tablespoons of a lovely fatty carrier oil.
Simple, effective, and all from nature’s garden.
However, just because essential oils are natural doesn’t mean they are always safe. They must be used responsibly, and we are here to tell you how! On top of that, you’ll find out
which oils are best for your skin, which essential oil packed products we recommend, plus much more!
What are essential oils?
We hear a lot of talk about essential oils, but what exactly are they?
Well, for a start, they are not actually oils. Rather, they are highly concentrated, volatile plant extracts that are obtained through a variety of different extraction methods.
Essential oils have the characteristic fragrance of the plant (or other source) from where they are extracted, and they have been used for centuries for their healing benefits.
How do I safely use essential oils?
We’re glad you asked! The safest way--and we would say the only way--to use essential oils on the skin is to dilute them first (don’t worry, diluting essential oils won’t take away any of their effectivity or loveliness!)
To dilute your essential oils, simply pick a carrier oil of your choice (jojoba, almond, avocado oil, etc.) and add a few drops of the right essential oil or oils for your skin type (more on that in a moment!)
For an idea of how much to add, try this handy guide from Tisserand essential oils.
By diluting your oils, you make them safe for the skin, thus avoiding any potentially serious reactions.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to avoid essential oils altogether for now, or speak to a certified aromatherapist for more information.
Which oils are best for my skin type?
- For dry or mature skin: sandalwood, geranium, clary sage
- For acne-prone and oily skin: ylang-ylang, lavender, tea tree
- For normal/combo skin: lavender, rose, rose geranium
- For irritated skin: German chamomile, carrot, helichrysum
- For sensitive skin: neroli, palmarosa, German chamomile

Freshening Face Oil
This face oil is ideal for all skin types...simply mix in the recommended essential oils for your skin, et voila, a bespoke, nourishing facial oil that you can apply anytime you need it.
- 2oz carrier oil(s) of your choice (we particularly love rosehip and argan oil)
- 10-20 drops of essential oil(s) (depending on your skin type...see list above)
- Simply combine the carrier oil and essential oil of your choice in a dark amber glass bottle. Secure the cap and gently roll the bottle between your palms to mix.
- Cleanse your face, then apply 2-3 drops of face oil to the palms of your hands. Gently rub hands together to warm the oil and pat onto face, neck, and decollete.
