Upgrading Your Beauty Routine: 5 Bad Beauty Habits to Break in 2019

Beauty-routine-2019

We’re all guilty of bad habits, but did you know that your bad beauty habits can cause breakouts, hair loss, and even premature aging? Since January 1st is just around the corner, consider upgrading your beauty routine by quitting these bad beauty habits. These little changes will add up to big differences in the coming year (and beyond!)

Bad Habit: Skipping Sunscreen

Why It’s Bad:

The number one tenant of a good beauty routine? Wearing sunscreen! Exposure to UV rays is the most common cause of premature aging and it’s so preventable.

How to Fix It:

Make it a habit to wear mineral sunscreen every single day, even when the weather is cloudy. Keep a bottle in your purse, in your glove compartment, and next to your front door so you always have sun protection on hand when you need it.

If you tan, it’s time to kick that bad beauty habit cold turkey! Tanning is the worst bad habit for your skin. If you can’t live without a bronzed glow, cash in your tanning membership for spray tanning services.

Bad Habit: Not Washing Your Face Before Bed

Why It’s Bad:

The second biggest mistake you can make in your beauty routine is not washing your face before going to bed. Throughout the day, dirt, oil, makeup, and pollution sticks to our skin. If it’s not removed before bed, this icky mixture can lead to clogged pores, acne, and inflammation.

How to Fix It:

If you find that you’re always too tired to wash your face before bed, wash your face as soon as you come home from work instead. For late nights, keep a pack of natural makeup remover wipes on your nightstand so you can cleanse your skin before hitting the hay.

Bad Habit: Sleeping with Dirty Cotton Pillowcases

Why It’s Bad:

Even if your pillows don’t look or smell dirty, they are accumulating dirt, dust, oil, and bacteria. Sleeping on this buildup can clog your pores, leading to acne breakouts and blackheads. Plus, cotton fabric dries out your skin and hair, which can contribute to fine lines and frizz.

How to Fix It:

Donate your cotton pillowcases and replace them with pillowcases made from satin or silk, which are better for your skin and hair.

Wash your pillowcases at least once per week. If you’re prone to acne, we recommend buying an extra set so you can swap them out every other night.

Bad Habit: Biting Your Nails and Cuticles

Why It’s Bad:

Ragged nails and cuticles not only look bad, but they can also become infected. Plus, constantly putting your fingers to your mouth can put you at risk for diseases like the flu.

How to Fix It:

Keeping your hands adequately hydrated with a hand cream will prevent hangnails and make you less likely to chew on your cuticles. Or splurge on an expensive manicure. Spending some extra cash on your nails will make you think twice before biting them!

Bad Habit: Playing with Your Hair

Why It’s Bad:

Picking at split ends and twirling your strands puts unnecessary stress on your locks, which can in turn lead to breakage (hello, frizz!). Even worse, continually pulling on your hair can lead to hair loss over time.

How to Fix It:

Keep a hair tie on hand so you can pull your hair back if the temptation to twirl is too great! You might also want to pack a small brush in your bag so you can smooth snarls on the go.
